Our Range of Ales
|
When deciding what to call our brewery we were mindful to include our fellow ale lovers in England and Wales. Sandstone Brewery is located only a few miles from the border of England, which made us focus on how we bridge this boundary. Because of our geography we naturally focussed on the Holt Bridge, which spans the River Dee (actually this was done by staring at the bridge, waiting for inspiration, on a cold and frosty Christmas Eve). With Holt Village on one side and Farndon Village on the other we noticed the abundance of weathered sandstone. The observant amongst you will notice the similarity between our logo and the outline of Farndon, looking from the Holt side of River Dee! That was the first major decision made by the team and thankfully no real disagreements were had. |

We took the Village Theme further when deliberating the ale range. We wanted to elaborate on the characters of a village, people we all know and avoid: the dodgy doctor, always gloved-up and ready for action; the lush behind the bar, ready to lend a helping hand and the postman, too busy playing Postman’s-Knock to deliver the mail… Who knows where this may end!!! | Sandstone Edge 3.8% an aromatic session ale with a golden straw appearance and a light bitterness and body to the aftertaste. It is comprised of a fusion of fuggles and goldings hops at the beginning of the brew combined with pale, crushed malt. The sweet smell is thanks to a handful of late cascade hops. So get stuck in... you won't be disappointed. | ![]() |
| Poachers Pale 4.4% has a powerful bitterness with generous amounts of aromatic hops which give this beer a wonderfully refreshing and light taste. It will help fill your bag with a couple of illicit birds. | ![]() |
| Postmistress 4.4% is a golden red ale, with a medium body and bitterness to taste. Just ripe to warm your Winter Cockles. It is a union of three hops, goldings, fuggles and styrian with shots of crystal, chocolate and pale malt. Again our Head Brewer has been pioneering, throwing in a handful of late fuggles hops with a sniff of extra Styrian at the end. | ![]() |

| Doctors Orders 4.5% is a full bodied ale with a slight nutty, nay roasted coffee taste. Pale maris otter malt is blended with amber and crystal malts to give a distinctive toffee colour. Bitterness comes from a combination of challenger, fuggles and golding hops which gives the ale a lingering bitter finish which gradually overcomes the initial sweetness. Doctors Orders was struck off the register in 2009 to make way for Sleeping Policeman and Festive Fairy. | ![]() |
| Festive Fairy 5.2% flew in for a Christmas Visit in December 2009... A full bodied, rich and fruity ale, maybe she'll be back next year. | ![]() |
| Buxom Barmaid 4.7% is a rich-golden, wholesome, Springtime ale. It's fruity overtones are a result of Brewer's Gold hops infused with Fuggles and Goldings. Maris Otter Malt has produced a full-bodied mouth-feel, which will quench the thirst leaving you wanting more...A frisky little number sure to put a spring back into your step. | ![]() |
