Welcome to Sandstone Brewery
The Brewery
SANDSTONE BREWERY has helped to restore a traditional craft to the town of Wrexham. Commisioned in late 2008, the 4-barrel plant is situated in a former explosives manufacturing unit on Wrexham Industrial Estate, but so far the only explosions have been the occasional popping of a keystone.
Brewery visits (tours) can be provided by arrangement, where the brewers will be delighted to explain the processes and provide the odd glass of ale as refreshment.
Drawing on the thirty year experience of Head Brewer, Pene Coles who is well known in the area for her wonderful Jolly Brewer beers, Sandstone Brewery produces well-rounded beers using only traditional materials. The beers are full bodied, and vary in colour, and the lighter beers are heavily late-hopped for aroma, and with a range of balanced bitterness to suite a variety of palates.
The Beers
The first beer to emerge from the brewery was Sandstone Edge, which quickly became the leading seller from the range of beers, and still is today; this was followed by Postman Prat and Doctors Orders. The latter has been retired for the moment, whilst the former has been rebadged as Postmistress, and is a regular beer in the brewery portfolio. More recently, Buxom Barmaid has been suspended from the bar, allowing our newest beer Poachers Pale to make an appearance. This beer has sold so well that it is now a permanent feature in the range. Sleeping Policeman was launched late in 2009, and is another occasional beer. In May 2010, Y Forwyn Fywn was launched. This was a classic mild ale, and it's subtle flavours found a lot of favour with drinkers, so it is now added to the portfolio of occasional beers.
The Brewers
Pene Coles and James Bendall are the creators of the beer recipes, and take full credit (and blame) for the results. Keith Porter is sometimes allowed to brew (under strict supervision) as a welcome relief from managing the commercial aspects of the brewery and testing the product (as well as thorough market research!)
